Have you been hacked?
I hope not. If you ask me, it is an obtrusive and violating act of terrorism. And I hope that you NEVER have to experience it.
But we had better face it. Hackers are out there. Just waiting to find another victim. And we had all better be aware and try to protect ourselves.
So I’m going to give you a quick tip that might help keep you off of a hacker’s radar.
If you have created your own Wordpress website, you can make this change yourself. If you had a developer create the website for you, check with him or her to make sure that they have followed this advice.
Often, when you install a copy of Wordpress to your server, you leave the Username set to Admin. Sometimes you select the password, and sometimes you let Wordpress assign a password.
In any event, this Admin Username has Administration privileges. And many of you leave it that way.
This is what the hackers are counting on!
So let’s make it a little more difficult for them.
Log in as the administrator and create a new User, giving this new Username complete Administrator privileges. This new Username will actually become the new Administrator. REMEMBER THE PASSWORD FOR THIS NEW USER.
Then log out of Wordpress.
Log in again using this new Username.
In the Dashboard, click on the Users menu item found at the left of the screen. You want to edit the Users.
Hover the mouse over the admin Username and click Edit.
You are now on the screen where you can edit the User. Change the Role of the admin from Administrator to Subscriber. Then click the button at the bottom of the screen to Update the User.
There. That wasn’t too difficult. But you have just made it much harder for a hacker to get into your Wordpress site with Administrator privileges.
I will touch on some other security issues from time to time. But if you really want to make your site secure, you should purchase and read Wordpress Defender by John Hoff. The last time I checked, the book was only $39 and is well worth the price. You will literally kick yourself if your site is hacked and then you realize that you could have prevented all of the pain for just $39. Click on the book title above or on this link and go there now.
